How to start clicker training with your horse. This video will show you how to clicker train your horse. Hopefully this video will answer some of your questions! As with any method there are "rules" to follow and certain basics that need to be taught to enable you to succeed with this going forward. Once these basics/foundations are really solid then everything else is easy, but if you rush these or even ignore them then you are going to end up with a frustrated horse that can be pushy, and no one wants that whatever method you use! Triple is being a great model in showing the first behaviour I teach. There are other ways to do it (which I will go over another time) but this tends to be my go to. It's really important for them to learn how to behave around food and if you make this the first thing you teach then things after that should be pretty plain sailing (most of the time anyway!) but don't forget to revisit the basics from time to time (again this can be applied to any training!) For those that are skeptical about r+, take a look on Youtube or even find some Clicker training Facebook pages and see how these trainers horses behave around food. They are calm, quiet and content whilst being focused and engaged in whatever exercise is being asked of them, and that is what you are aiming for! HOW TO GET YOUR HORSE TO STOP KICKING THE DOOR?! Part 2 is here! If you haven't seen part 1 which explains a bit more about what I'm doing with Sunny, you can see it here! https://youtu.be/9KHrpezn8KQ So there was a big gap between our first and second session, roughly about 6 weeks, plus the target had moved and is now secured on the door, so the context of the behaviour I taught him last time had changed slightly, but no big deal just meant we had to almost start at step one again but as you can see he picked it up quickly and you can see the moment the penny drops! At the start he's kicking a lot and is quite annoyed at the fact of being in when his friends are out. He has adlib hay in there (and the field!) so has free choice but we know that doesn't always matter with a door kicker, but it's important when training some behaviours like this that they have free choice of food (just an FYI) Anyway! The kicking slowly gets less and the touching of the target gets more. This is because touching the ball is becoming more reinforcing for him than kicking the stable door (which is the whole idea!) After a while of doing this the ball itself will hold such a high reinforcing history that just touching it will be enough to make him feel good and treats won't always be necessary (but we are talking after a long time) This is what's happened in the past with the kicking and why he still likes to kick even though we don't reinforce it. Previously he likely would have gotten his feed quicker, or more hay, or been turned out. All those things reinforced the kicking. Now when he kicks we do nothing BUT when he touches his target he gets attention and a sweet! I will continue with the update videos over the weeks, but will try and make them shorter going forward.
